MPA Clay

I’m completely new to ceramics. Where should I start?

Our introductory clay experience is designed for complete beginners and offers an easy way to try working on the wheel before committing to a full class. If you’re ready to learn more, Beginning Wheel provides structured instruction over a six- or seven-week session.

Do I need previous experience to take a class?

Not for our beginner classes. Beginning Wheel is designed for students new to the wheel, while Hand-building & Surface welcomes a range of experience levels. Continuing and advanced classes are intended for students who already have the relevant foundational skills.

What’s the difference between classes and workshops?

Classes meet weekly over several weeks and are designed to build skills through sustained instruction and practice. Workshops offer shorter, more intensive opportunities to explore particular techniques and ideas with visiting ceramic artists.

What’s included with a class?

Clay, MPA Clay studio glazes, bisque and glaze firing, and shelf space for your work are included with tuition. Students provide their own basic pottery tool kit, which can also be purchased through MPA Clay.

Can I use the studio outside my class time?

Yes. Students enrolled in qualifying classes can reserve additional practice time during designated open-studio periods, giving you time to continue developing your work between classes.

What should I wear or bring?

Wear comfortable clothes that can get muddy and closed-toe shoes. Bring a basic pottery tool kit and a small towel; short nails are also helpful when working on the wheel. Tool kits are available for purchase through MPA Clay.

How old do I need to be to participate?

Classes, introductory experiences, and workshops are generally open to ages 16 and up. MPA Clay Membership is for ages 18 and up.

What is MPA Clay Membership?

Membership is designed for experienced ceramic artists looking for the independence of their own studio practice within a shared artistic community. Members receive 24/7 key-card access, dedicated shelf space, studio glazes and firing, as well as priority access and discounts for workshops and classes. Membership is capped to protect access to the studio and maintain a strong working environment.

How do I know if I’m ready for membership?

Members should be able to work independently and safely without formal instruction. As a general guide, applicants should have at least one year of recent ceramics experience and be comfortable managing their own making process, whether working on the wheel or hand-building. If you’re still developing those skills, our classes provide a pathway toward independent practice.

How do I apply for membership?

Applications include 5–8 images of recent work and a short statement about your experience and practice. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and accepted applicants complete an orientation and membership agreement before receiving studio access. Membership is limited to 36 artists.

What if I miss a class or need to cancel?

We’re unable to provide make-up classes, prorated refunds, or credits for individual missed classes, although students may use available practice time to continue their work. Cancellation and refund terms vary by offering; please see our MPA Clay Policies for full details.
