What holds when a home breaks? How do we live through grief without losing our capacity for wonder?

Afterlight brings together six mixed-media works exploring loss and displacement, imagination and renewal. The series draws from Husting’s experience of late childhood, which was shaped by instability, while also responding to the emotional and material conditions of the present: fractured communities, ecological threat, and uncertain times.

The exhibition unfolds in two movements. Three wall-mounted reliefs show harm and decay. Three freestanding sculptures reach toward regrowth. Together, the work asks how a damaged structure can become shelter again, and how memory can carry us forward.

Artist Statement

I'm drawn to the spaces where things break open, where decay, endurance, and transformation intertwine. My work begins in those moments of fracture, where endings quietly give way to beginnings. I combine everyday home-building materials (wood, plaster, and paint) with modern technologies (backlit film and embedded LED lighting) to produce dark, worn dwellings that protect small but luminous vignettes of life and imagination. 

Each sculptural work contains a series of glowing, recessed ‘windows’ warmly backlit, reminiscent of a fireplace. Inside each cavern resides one of more than fifty hand-drawn illustrations in ink and graphite. Among them: a mother clutching her child, utopian mountainscapes, and forms caught between ruin and regeneration. My creative practice is shaped by the shifting terrain of family and community, by the birth of my child, deep personal loss, and the wider turbulence of the world around us. Each piece is both a question and a gesture toward possibility—a search for connection, healing, and glimpses of a gentler future
